The Red Dot Design Museum is organized by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen e. V. operated design museum in Essen. Since 1997, the museum has been located in the former boiler house of the Zollverein colliery, which was redesigned by Norman Foster for the new purpose.

The Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum – founded in 1930 – is one of eight research museums belonging to the Leibniz Association. It researches, teaches and preserves the history of the mining, processing and use of geo-resources across all of the relevant time periods.
