Discover Heidelberg
Heidelberg Castle
Schlosshof 1, 69117 Heidelberg ∙ Tel.: 06221 658 880
Heidelberg Castle is one of the most famous ruins in Germany and the landmark of the city of Heidelberg. Until its destruction in the War of the Palatinate Succession, it was the residence of the Electors of the Palatinate. Since its destruction by the soldiers of Louis XIV in 1689 and its demolition by French sappers on September 6, 1693, Heidelberg Castle has been only partially restored. After lightning set fire to the partially restored complex on June 24, 1764, restoration was abandoned. The castle ruins, made of red Neckar valley sandstone, rise 80 meters above the valley floor on the northern slope of the Königstuhl and dominate the image of the old town from there. The Ottheinrichsbau, one of the palace buildings of the castle, is one of the most important buildings of the German Mannerism. In the cultural-historical epoch of Romanticism, the castle ruins were stylized into an epitome of a bygone and admirable era. Today it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Europe.
The legendary castle illuminations attract thousands of people every year.
Hardly any other city offers such magical nights every June, July and September.
Bengal lights slowly bathe Heidelberg Castle in a mysterious red glow of fire. As if the ruins were burning for yet another time in their long history. Like the last time in 1689 and 1693, when the troops of the Sun King Louis XIV burned down the castle and the city, leaving behind the now world-famous ruins.
When the glowing castle slowly fades, the second part of the spectacle begins - the brilliant fireworks over the Neckar River. In 1613, Elector Frederick V had fireworks staged to greet his newly wedded wife Elizabeth Stuart in a manner befitting her status. This fireworks display laid the foundation for the later light shows over Heidelberg's night sky.
Old Bridge
At the Hackteufel, 69117 Heidelberg
The official name of the Old Bridge is Karl-Theodor-Brücke. It is one of Germany's oldest bridge structures and was first mentioned in a document in 1284. There were many wooden predecessor structures, but they were repeatedly destroyed by ice. In its present form it was built in 1788, but towards the end of the Second World War two piers were blown up by the Wehrmacht to stop the advancing Allied troops. In 1947 the bridge was completely reconstructed.
Königstuhl
Königstuhl, 69117 Heidelberg
The Königstuhl is the 568 meter high local mountain of Heidelberg. On the Königstuhl you will find an oasis of peace and relaxation, which at the same time offers a fantastic view of Heidelberg, the Neckar valley and the Rhine plain.
In the warm season it is between 5 and 6 degrees cooler here than in the city.
From the castle, a steep staircase (also called the ladder of heaven) and, since 1907, the mountain railroads lead up to the Königstuhl: from the Kornmarkt valley station, you go via the castle and Molkenkur stations up to the summit.
Alternatively, bus line 39 also runs hourly from Bismarckplatz to the Königstuhl from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. At the top, visitors can expect not only breathtaking views, but also many attractions: the Fairy Tale Paradise amusement park with 48,000 square meters promises magical hours for the whole family, the falconry Tinnunculus organizes daily public flight demonstrations and at the famous national observatory you can immerse yourself in the fascination of astronomy.
Those who prefer hiking will find many charming destinations and routes of every fitness level starting from the Königstuhl. Two very special forest trails have been created here: the "Via Naturae" and the Forest Experience Trail.
Philosophenweg
Philosopher's Path, 69120 Heidelberg
The Philosophenweg opens up a true postcard view of the old town, the river, the Old Bridge, the castle and the highest mountain in the Odenwald, the Königstuhl, which towers over the city at almost 600 meters.
This sunny spot on the southern slope of the Heiligenberg is reminiscent of Tuscany with its mild climate and vegetation. Unprotected, exotic plants thrive on this climatic island, which is one of the warmest places in Germany: Japanese woolly medlar and American cypress, Spanish broom and Portuguese cherry, lemon and pomegranate, bamboo, palms, pines. Everything blooms weeks earlier than in the valley.
