What can you do in Darmstadt?
Darmstadt is culturally known and therefore particularly interesting for visitors due to the Art Nouveau heritage that was created in the artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe in the years 1899 to 1914. To this day, numerous buildings and works of art can be admired on historical city tours. For example, the market square with the old town hall is located in the heart of the southern Hessian city. The town hall square, modernly designed in 1996 with high-quality granite from India, is reserved for pedestrians. The beautiful 1546 fountain in its centre is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists. The old town hall dates from the second half of the 16th century. In addition, there is the Hessian State Museum, particularly worth seeing, with archaeological exhibits from the Messel mine as well as works by Joseph Beuys, and the State Theatre as the largest of a large number of theatres. If you go south of darmstadt, you will find the Fürstenlager State Park, a former summer residence, which also includes a wonderful park landscape. The Fürstenlager was built around 1790 in an idyllic side valley in Auerbach, a district of Bensheim an der Bergstrasse since 1939. Frankenstein Castle in Mühltal in the Odenwald is a popular excursion destination and is especially known for its Halloween festival. Schloss Auerbach is one of the best-known castles on Bergstrasse. The unique view of the Rhine plain and the Odenwald is particularly fascinating.
But Darmstadt does not only offer an extensive programme for those interested in culture. The large Woog is a wonderful natural swimming pool located in the middle of the city of Darmstadt. It is open from May to September and is very popular with residents and tourists alike. It has a bathing island and is equipped with water slides and a modern beach volleyball court. Darmstadt also has numerous attractive green areas. Besides the botanical garden and the Prinz Emil Garden, the Vortex Garden and the Prinz Georg Garden are also among the city's green oases. The Prinz-Georg-Garten is located in Schlossgartenstraße north of the Residenzschloss. It is a classic 18th century French park that impresses with its strict geometry and artistically designed paths and flower beds. In this beautiful baroque garden, visitors can discover water fountains and historical sundials. In front of the palace there is a tea house and an aviary.
Since 1999, the Schlossgrabenfest Darmstadt has held its breath once in early summer. The Hessian music festival will then dominate the life of the science and student city of Darmstadt around the castle for four days. The Heinerfest in Darmstadt takes place a few weeks after the Schlossgrabenfest. It offers visitors culture and culinary delights from all over the world. At the end of the year, the Darmstadt Christmas market attracts visitors with mulled wine, handicrafts and delicacies.
