The Catholic parish church and former collegiate church of St. Kunibert was consecrated in 1247 and is therefore the youngest of the Romanesque churches in Cologne.

Cologne Cathedral is a cathedral of superlatives, a landmark and the heart of the Rhine metropolis. The foundation stone of the Gothic cathedral was laid on August 15, 1248, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The old cathedral was apparently no longer grand enough to house the relics of the Three Wise Men, which Archbishop Rainald of Dassel had brought to Cologne from conquered Milan in 1164. These relics made the cathedral one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. The impressive Gothic architecture, the Shrine of the Three Wise Men, the outstanding stained glass windows, and many other significant works of art led UNESCO to declare Cologne Cathedral a World Heritage Site in 1996.

In Cologne, an Italian created one of the world's most famous perfumes, Eau de Cologne. The scent reminded him of an Italian spring morning after the rain, wrote perfumer Johann Maria Farina in 1708. He smelled oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bergamot, citron, and the blossoms and herbs of his homeland. Today, his creation is primarily associated with one city: Cologne. It was the Italian's new Eau de Cologne that made Cologne world-famous as a fragrance capital as early as the 18th century. Today, Farina's descendants, now in their eighth generation, still produce the original. The perfume factory still stands opposite Cologne's City Hall and now houses a fragrance museum.

The Wallraf Museum demonstrates how modern and relevant European art from the 13th to the beginning of the 20th century remains today. The museum boasts one of the world's most important collections of medieval art. Stefan Lochner's popular "Madonna in the Rose Bower" is a highlight. Other highlights include Baroque paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Tiepolo, and Boucher, German Romanticism, and 19th-century French painting.

St. Maria in Lyskirchen is the smallest of the twelve large Romanesque basilicas in Cologne's Old Town. This Roman Catholic parish church belongs to the Archdiocese of Cologne and is located in the southern part of the Old Town. It was built in its present form as a three-aisled basilica with galleries, oriented towards St. Kunibert, between 1198/1200 and 1225. St. Maria in Lyskirchen is particularly distinguished by its historic vault frescoes from the 13th century, which are largely preserved in this church, unique among the twelve, and by the veneration of the Madonna of the Sailors.

St. Gereon is a former collegiate church and one of the twelve major Romanesque churches in Cologne, located on Gereonshof street in the Altstadt-Nord district. The ground plan of the central western part of the church is a decagon (ten-sided polygon), beneath which parts of an oval structure from the second half of the 4th century can still be found.

The Catholic parish church and former convent church of St. Maria im Kapitol in Cologne is considered a unique example of Rhenish Romanesque architecture. The church dates back to an ancient podium temple, probably built in the mid-1st century AD (beneath the nave of the present church).

St. Pantaleon is an early Romanesque church in Cologne, located in the southern part of the Old Town. It is one of the twelve major Romanesque basilicas in Cologne's Old Town, whose preservation is supported by the Association for the Preservation of Romanesque Churches in Cologne. The church is dedicated to Saint Pantaleon (Latin form of his name), as well as Saints Cosmas and Damian.

The Ulrepforte, known in the local Cologne dialect as "Ühlepooz," was built in the early 13th century as part of Cologne's medieval city wall. The city granted the remaining structure to the Kölschen Funke rut-wieß vun 1823 e. V. (Cologne Carnival Society) on a hereditary lease. Reconstruction was successfully completed in 1956, and the building was once again in use.
