Visit Gustav Klimt's legendary painting "The Kiss" and the important works of Schiele and Kokoschka. And admire the splendor of the Baroque palace complex and its expansive gardens. Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736), a successful military commander and art lover, commissioned Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to build the Belvedere Garden Palace as his summer residence—at that time, just outside the city gates. This Baroque masterpiece comprises two palaces (Upper and Lower Belvedere) and today houses Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present day. Upper Belvedere – The World's Largest Klimt Collection The centerpiece of the Belvedere's collection is the paintings by Gustav Klimt, including his golden works "The Kiss" and "Judith." Masterpieces by Schiele and Kokoschka, as well as works of French Impressionism and highlights of Viennese Biedermeier (Waldmüller, Amerling, Fendi), impress here just as much as paintings by Makart, Boeckl, Wotruba, Hausner, Hundertwasser, and others.

Location & surroundings
St. Stephen's Cathedral is the symbol of Vienna. Construction began in the 12th century. Today, it is the most important Gothic building in Austria. St. Stephen's Cathedral is 107.2 meters long and 34.2 meters wide. It has four towers. The tallest is the south tower, at 136.44 meters. 343 steps lead to the tower keeper's room, from which there is a magnificent view over Vienna. A total of 13 bells hang here. However, the most famous bell of St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Pummerin, is located in the 68.3-meter-high north tower. It is the second largest free-swinging church bell in Europe. The double-headed eagle of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as well as the coats of arms of the city of Vienna and Austria, are laid on the roof of St. Stephen's Cathedral using colorful roof tiles. The interior of St. Stephen's Cathedral was repeatedly altered over the centuries up to the Baroque period.
Visit Schönbrunn Palace, Empress Sisi's former summer residence. The baroque complex entices visitors with its enchanting parkland, Palm House, Gloriette, and the oldest continuously operating zoo in the world. Spend a day at Schönbrunn: Explore the state rooms on a "Grand Tour with audio guide," glimpse the magnificent ceremonial rooms and lavishly furnished salons, and wander through the maze. Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the imperial family, is one of the most beautiful baroque complexes in Europe. Owned by the Habsburgs since 1569, Empress Sisi, wife of Emperor Ferdinand II, commissioned the construction of a pleasure palace on the grounds in 1642 and first named the estate "Schönbrunn." The palace and gardens, built after the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1696, underwent a major redesign under Maria Theresa after 1743. For most of the year, the Habsburgs resided in the countless apartments required by a large imperial family, in addition to the state rooms.
Palaces, Villas, and Unbounded Style Clashes Vienna's embassy district lies on both sides of the Belvedere Palace and, extending from Schwarzenbergplatz, forms an almost right-angled triangle. Here you'll find over thirty diplomatic missions from all over the world, as well as many hidden gems. Between Art Nouveau and Imperial Power The French Embassy, located directly on Schwarzenbergplatz, is arguably the district's most prominent building. Designed and built at the beginning of the 20th century by Georges Chedanne, who later became the French state architect, Chedanne's blend of Art Nouveau, imperial splendor, and Viennese Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) didn't win him many friends among the Viennese. The embassy quickly became a grotesque and ornate eyesore. The widespread dissatisfaction nearly led to its demolition, but eventually, the extravagant building was accepted, and it has even reportedly found its way onto the occasional postcard.
